Village Well Ride Day 28: Bodega Bay to Fairfax, CA

This day had it all, good and bad. On the bad side, the traffic on highway 1 was heavy and constant, and we couldn’t wait to get away from it. There were also wild temperature fluctuations: it was cold on the coast but really warm inland, and we had to adjust clothing several times to adapt to changing temperatures. 

On the good side, we didn’t spend much time in the heavy traffic. Instead, we left highway 1 for the Sir Francis Drake Highway, a semi-rural route that passes through lots of farm country, with waving grass and lots of cows. This eventually gave way to rural fishing communities, where we found kind people willing to fill our water bottles even though the store was closed. Then we hit a bike path through a redwood forest, a huge relief from the heat and sun. Then, as we got closer to San Francisco, the landscape changed to small, tourism-driven communities, with lots of bakeries and coffee shops. Finally, we ended up riding through a city landscape in the San Francisco area, where they obviously think a lot about bike infrastructure.  

We’ll be crossing the Golden Gate Bridge today, into the heart of San Francisco, where we will undoubtedly find some good food and good people.
